Am I entitled to a premium reduction?

Insured persons whose annual taxable income does not exceed a certain level (which varies according to canton and civil status) are entitled to a reduction in their health insurance premiums (individual premium reduction/ IPV).

As a rule, the entitlement to premium reduction is calculated automatically on a quarterly basis on the basis of the definitive tax data for the previous year.

In accordance with Art. 65 KVG, the cantons shall pay the insured person, who live in modest economic circumstances, premium reductions.

In principle, the cantons are obliged to pay the individual premium reduction and the flat-rate amounts for health insurance for supplementary benefit recipients directly to the health insurers from 1 January 2014. The health insurers in turn will pay the reduction contributions to the entitled persons after determining their entitlement. As a rule, the premium reduction is deducted directly from the basic insurance premium bill.

If you have any questions regarding entitlement to and payment of the premium reduction, please contact the cantonal implementing office directly. Click on a cantonal emblem for more detailed information on individual premium reductions in a specific canton:
